SPECIALTY COURTS WE SERVE

Juvenile Specialty Courts:
Court 360°

The Court 360° Program is in the 315th Juvenile District Court in Harris County, Texas. The program was developed in order to address the unique needs of justice-involved youth with mental health issues. Court 360° was previously known as the Mental Health Court, but changed names to reflect the comprehensive approach used to assist these youth by addressing not only their mental health issues but also other challenges that may be related to their underlying delinquent conduct. An individualized treatment plan is developed for each participant utilizing a comprehensive, strength-based approach and is implemented by a collaborative and multidisciplinary team.

By addressing psychiatric and therapeutic issues and through advocacy and mentorship, the youth are able to obtain the services necessary to treat their mental health concerns and increase pro-social behavior in the areas of family relationships, educational performance, and community engagement. Court 360° provides an opportunity for each participant to better understand their mental health needs and change the trajectory of their lives through participation in the program.

SUCCESS STORIES

Eli
14-year-old Eli* was experiencing significant behavior problems at home and at school. Although the family had sought out psychiatric services, the focus had been on medication management. The Court 360° Team was able to identify the need for individual and family therapy in addition to medication to better address Eli’s mental health needs. A therapist worked with the family and they made great progress, with Eli developing coping strategies to better manage his feelings. The Team participated in ARD meetings at school in order to ensure that his academic and emotional needs were being addressed. He was encouraged to develop a physical outlet and joined a sports team where he experienced positive socialization. The family came to understand that while medication was important, there were other areas that needed to be addressed to facilitate Eli’s success.

Bianca
16-year-old Bianca* had a significant trauma history and interpersonal difficulties, but the Court 360° Team was able to gain her trust and develop a plan for success. The team worked with the school to implement a 504 Plan to address Bianca’s academic and behavior issues at school. Her mental health needs were addressed through referrals for psychiatric follow-up and the team’s therapist assisted her with strategies to better regulate her emotions and goal setting. Bianca’s behavior began to improve and she was able to enter a job readiness internship program that helped her learn how to work with others and obtain summer employment. The Team assisted with transportation and supported her success as she learned about self-sufficiency, working hard, and budgeting. Bianca’s school performance and relationships with others showed significant improvement, and she is now on her way to high school graduation.
